Shikoyaki — Mantaro Kubota (Atelier Mantaro)
Handcrafted piece by piece by ceramic artist Mantaro Kubota at his studio, Atelier Mantaro, in Kizugawa, Kyoto — this is Shikoyaki (紫紅焼). "Shi" means purple, "Ko" means red, and "Yaki means pottery.
Its deep, purple-toned red glaze is a color all his own, arrived at through years devoted to the craft. Built on a striking base of soft aqua blue and a rich spectrum of purple, layered with tones of reddish-violet, the design carries a striking, one-of-a-kind beauty — equally at home in a Japanese or Western setting.
